TWO ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Coast Surfrider Chapter Rides Wave of Activism
into Year Two
Thanks
to a groundswell of community support, TC Surfrider
eagerly pursued our mission of environmental
conservation, activism, research and education into
our second year. Year two achievements include:
- Being
featured in Surfing Magazine’s “Green
Edition” as one of the international environmental
activists making a difference in 2006.
- Securing
The BUZZ 103.1 FM as a major chapter sponsor.
- Hosting
a comprehensive river and beach cleanup in coordination
with Keep Martin Beautiful and the Ocean Conservancy,
filling a 20 cubic yard dumpster with trash collected
from Indian River spoil islands and Hutchinson
Island beaches and delivering picnic tables donated
by the Martin County Parks & Recreation Dept.
to the spoil islands.
- Hosting
beach cleanups, surfing contests and school events
in conjunction with local surf shops and the
Martin County High School Surf Club.
- Campaigning
for the successful Martin County half-cent “Clean
Water” sales tax.
- Raising
funds through the sale of “Save Our Rivers,
Save Our Treasure Coast” bumper stickers
to support The Rivers Coalition’s lawsuit
against the federal government to permanently
cease all toxic discharges from Lake Okeechobee
- Hosting
informative presentations by scientific organizations
such as Ocean Research and Conservation to discuss
new water testing research being conducted our
local estuaries.
- Sponsoring
booths at popular community events including
the BUZZ Bake Sale music festival, the St. Lucie
County Conservation Alliance Party in the Park,
the Port Salerno Seafood Festival and Teen Dancin’ in
the Streets
- Conducting
a holiday toy drive collecting over 100 toys
and $700 in donations to fulfill the wish lists
of over 60 children at the Hibiscus Children’s
Center.
- Attending
a series of coastal construction workshops at
the invitation of the Martin County Coastal Engineering
Department to evaluate current shore protection
practices.
- Collecting
over 800 signatures in support of the Water Resources
Development Act which, if passed, will allocate
1.3 billion dollars to the restoration of the
Indian River Lagoon.
- Hosting
monthly chapter meetings with informative guests,
including water quality experts from Ocean Research
and Conservation and the University of Miami
- Receiving
the 2007 Environmental Stewardship Award from
Keep Martin Beautiful for litter prevention activities
and successful completion of many conservation
projects.
- Teaming
up with Martin County Division of Environmentally
Sensitive Lands to restore an ecologically significant
five-acre tract on South Hutchinson Island with
native plantings.
- Teaming
up with the BUZZ 103.1 FM, Keep Martin Beautiful
and Martin County Parks and Recreation on Earth
Day to host a comprehensive clean-up of Hutchinson
Island beaches, drawing over 140 volunteers and
collecting over 2,500 pounds of trash, The clean-up
was followed by a free barbecue and reggae concert
by NO KA OI.
- Conducting
a surf art raffle at the BUZZ Beach Clean-up
raising over $1,500 to sponsor disadvantaged
youths from Hibiscus Children’s Center
to a summer surf camp hosted by Surf Central
Surf Shop and Florida Oceanographic Society.
- Co-hosting
the Martin County “Summer Kick Off” event
promoting positive activities for youths during
the summer months, including surf camps and volunteer
opportunities.
- Submitting
a petition with over 800 signatures to Senate
leaders imploring the passage of the Water Resources
Development Act.
- Hosting “International
Surfing Day” in coordination with local
three surf camps to share the lore of surfing
and importance of environmental responsibility.

Three Accomplishments
The National Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit grassroots organization dedicated
to the protection and preservation of our world’s oceans, waves
and beaches. Founded in 1984 by a handful of visionary surfers, the
Surfrider Foundation now maintains over 50,000 members and over 60
chapters across the United States and Puerto Rico, with international
