YEAR THREE ACCOMPLISHMENTS

No Slowing Down for TC Surfrider in Year Three

Confronted with critical environmental and beach access issues, TC Surfrider steps up the fight to preserve our oceans waves and beaches. Year three achievements (to date) include the following achievements:

  • Continuing our “Save Our Rivers, Save Our Treasure Coast” bumper stickers campaign to support The Rivers Coalition’s lawsuit against the federal government to cease toxic discharges from Lake Okeechobee
  • Attending regular workshops as a member of the Coastal Working Group -- an advisory council created by the Martin County Coastal Engineering to provide guidance on upcoming beach nourishment projects.
  • Thanks to the tireless efforts of the Surfrider Foundation and concerned citizens, public access has been granted '' in perpetuity” at Bon Air Beach on Jupiter Island, resulting in the removal of illegal ''No Trespassing'' signs that have stood for 30 years.  In addition, the Town of Jupiter Island agreed to expand public access to Hobe Sound Public Beach providing 54 parking spaces at Town Hall on weekends and holidays Click here to read the editorial by TC Surfrider Vice Chair Chris Shultz .
  • Hosting an eco-friendly car wash with RGS Labs of Palm City and raising over $600 for the Martin County High School Surf Club.
  • Surfrider’s Florida chapters initiated Florida Senate Bill 1472 -- a landmark piece of legislation that 1) preserves the state's public right to access the beach and 2) protects beachgoers and turtles alike from the harmful affects of experimental coastal armoring. The bill was signed into effect in November by Governor Charlie Crist at a ceremony honoring the appointment of eight-time world surfing champion Kelly Slater to the Governor’s Council for Physical Fitness.
  • The Surfrider Fall Beach Cleanup on November 18th netted over 1,000 pounds of trash from Martin County beaches and raised several hundred dollars for local charities. The event was co-hosted by Keep Martin Beautiful and the BUZZ 103.1 FM.
  • Greeting 20,000 music lovers at the BUZZ Bake Sale alternative music festival at the Sound Advice Amphitheater. Surfrider volunteers passed out lineup cards, signed up fans for a chance to meet and greet headliners ''Three Days Grace, gave away tons of CDs and other cool stuff provided by Anchor Blue Clothing, and distributed information to hundreds of people interested in joining Surfrider chapters from TC to Miami.
  • The Treasure Coast Surfrider Chapter's Second Annual Holiday Toy Drive, co-hosted by Osceola Street Café and Ohana Surf Shop, collected hundreds of toy along and over $2,000 in donations to fulfill the wish lists of over 40 disadvantaged youths at The Hibiscus Children's Center -- the Treasure Coast's only shelter providing a safe and nurturing for abused and neglected children.
  • Lobbying the St. Lucie County Commission and initiating a petition to oppose Florida Power and Light’s plan to erect 400’ tall wind turbines on South Hutchinson Island public beaches.
  • Opposing the Town of Jupiter Island’s new regulation closing Hobe Sound Public Beach at night in defiance of Martin County’s 24-hour beach access laws.Click here to read the editorial by TC Surfrider board member Juan Ayala
  • Teaming up with Surf Central Surf Shop at the Treasure Chest Pro/Am Surf contest to raise over $600 to sponsor foster kids from Hibiscus Children's Village to summer surf camp.
