Welcome to the Surfrider Foundation Treasure Coast Chapter.

YEAR ONE ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Treasure Coast Surfrider Chapter takes huge strides in a short time

Since getting its feet wet in September, 2005, the Treasure Coast Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation has racked up some major accomplishments in its first year on the water, thanks to the tireless efforts of its board members and dedicated volunteers. Achievements include:

  • Occupying a seat on the board of the Martin County-based Rivers Coalition, voting “yes” to proceed with legal action to halt the releases from Lake Okeechobee that have created irreparable harm to our estuaries and near-shore reefs.
  • Initiating the “Save Our Rivers, Save Our Treasure Coast” awareness campaign, distributing over 1000 bumper stickers with all proceeds donated to the Rivers Coalition Legal Defense Fund.
  • Conducting a chapter wide letter-writing campaign to U.S. Senate Majority Leader William Frist imploring him to bring the Water Resources Development Act bill to the senate floor for vote.
  • Initiating a successful petition drive and public awareness campaign demanding the proper restoration of a 3.7 mile emergency dune remediation project in St. Lucie County.
  • Meeting with St. Lucie County Commissioners to identify coastal issues and research grant sources to fund the restoration of hurricane-ravaged Blind Creek Preserve and area beaches.
  • Hosting an intensive clean-up of St. Lucie County’s Walton Rocks beach and rebuilding picnic areas -- followed by a surf clinic and barbecue sponsored by Kristi’s Restaurant.
  • Hosting a major beach clean-up of South Hutchinson Island Beaches in Martin County, followed by a barbecue and surf clinic sponsored by local surf and skate shops, Stuart Fine Foods, Hutchinson Island Publix, BJ’s Wholesale Club, and the Martin County Parks and Recreation Dept.
  • Co-hosting the Treasure Chest Pro-Am surf contest with Surf Central Surf Shop
(the first pro surf contest held locally in over 20 years).
  • Raising $800 through raffles sponsored by Surf Central to send youths from Hibiscus Children’s Center to environmental surf camp.
  • Visiting local schools to introduce Surfrider, and share a positive environmental message.
  • Hosting local high school surfing contests, providing judges and trophies.
  • Hosting family-oriented surf movie nights at local restaurants.
  • Conducting community outreach booths at a number of events, including the St. Lucie County Conservation Alliance “Party in the Park,” The Rivers Coalition “Dirty River Rally,” and “Jammin’ Jensen” weekly street fest.
  • Providing informative guest speakers and audio-video presentations at monthly meetings, addressing topics such as water quality testing, beach re-nourishment alternatives and coastal conservation issues.
  • Initiating a successful regional petition drive and awareness campaign to prevent the Army Corps of Engineers from dredging 1 million cubic yards of sand from St. Lucie Shoal to re-nourish Miami Beach.
  • Teaming up with civic and educational groups and environmental agencies to replant a five-acre tract of hurricane-ravaged Blind Creek Park with over 2,000 native plants to control erosion into the Indian River.
