Many butts about it, the 2nd Annual

Surfrider BUZZ Beach Clean-up measures large

in stoke and trash collected

Thanks to overwhelming community support and the hard work of dedicated volunteers, the Second Annual BUZZ Beach Clean-up and Music Festival, held at Stuart Beach on April 20, was a huge success. The event, hosted by the Treasure Coast Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, BUZZ 103.1 FM and Keep Martin Beautiful, drew a crowd of over 250 volunteers who scoured the beaches of South Hutchinson Island for gnarly detritus. By 11 a.m., two 40 cubic yard dumpsters were overflowing with trash. Armed with rubber gloves, drink cups and lots of determination, the Surfrider "Butthead Brigade" attacked the most prevalent items left on our local beaches filling over 30 large drink cups with cigarette butts.

Following the clean-up, a huge prize raffle was held benefitting Students for Recycling -- a new recycling program being launched in local schools by Surfrider, Keep Martin Beautiful and Waste Management. Prizes included original artwork, along with surf gear and merchandise provided by local merchants.

At noon, barbeques got stoked, surfboards got waxed and the beach party fell into full swing with memorable performances by local reggae bands Fresh Catch, Jomico and Whaileyman and the Bamboo Shoots. Big ups to all the bandeleros for lending their positive vibe to the day (and a Surfrider shout out to Josh aka "Whailey da marathon man" who played the entire afternoon with all three bands).

A massive "Mahalo" to all our community sponsors, local artisans and individuals who donated their time, talent and incredible generosity to make the event a success. Special thanks to BUZZ 103.1 FM, Keep Martin Beautiful, Ohana Surf Shop, Anchor Blue, Surf Central, Island Water Sports, Sunrise Surf Shop, Milam's Market, Publix Supermarket, Osceola Street Cafe, Planet Smoothie Cafe,Key Lime Cafe, Hoffman's Chocolates, 3one9 Design, Florida Computer Pros, MC2 Photography, Rick Myers, Josh Hoilman, Cody Rutland, Tammi Clifford, Chris Reeves, Andrew Shultz, Michael Stratman, and so many more...

Props also to Martin County Parks and Rec for working hard to keep our parks and beaches beautiful everyday.

And finally, a big thanks to everyone who came out to lend a hand and clean the sand.
